Breast cancer cases and deaths are expected to rise worldwide, according to a new report from the WHO. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and its partners examined the current and future impacts of breast cancer around the world.
A Nature Medicine study found that 1 in 20 women worldwide will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. If current trends continue, by 2050, breast cancer could cause 3.2 million new cases and 1.1 million deaths each year.
According to WHO, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the second most common worldwide. In 2022, there were 2.3 million new cases and 670,000 deaths. People aged 50 and older made up 71% of new cases and 79% of deaths.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) discovered that India had the third highest cancer incidence after China and the United States, accounting for more than 10% of the world's cancer-related deaths and ranking second after China.
They also predicted that over the next two decades, India will face a formidable challenge in managing cancer deaths, with a 2% annual increase in cases as the population ages.
