The Standing Committee on Defence revealed that the Indian Air Force (IAF) experienced 34 aircraft accidents during the 13th Defence Plan period (2017–2022). Most incidents were attributed to human error and technical defects, highlighting aviation safety challenges.

Key incidents included the Mi-17V5 crash in December 2021, which claimed the life of Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat. Spikes in accidents during 2018–19 and 2021–22 have raised concerns about operational safety.

The ageing MiG-21 accounted for a significant number of accidents, with issues ranging from technical defects to human error. Other aircraft involved included the Mi-17, Jaguar, Su-30, and Kiran trainer jets.
