The Economic Survey 2024-25, presented in the Lok Sabha on January 31, highlights the impact of lifestyle changes on climate change mitigation. Carpooling alone could save 380 million litres of fuel in India.

What is Carpooling?

Carpooling is the concept of sharing your car to accommodate more than one person at a time, eliminating the need for riders to drive themselves in separate vehicles.

The Survey promotes small yet effective actions like carpooling, recycling newspapers, finishing food on plates, and composting waste. These changes, when adopted widely, can contribute significantly to environmental sustainability.

Under the ‘Climate and Environment’ chapter, the Survey discusses India’s Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) Mission, which aims to encourage low-carbon lifestyles. A NITI Aayog report suggests that if 13% of the global population embraces these changes, carbon emissions could reduce by 20%.
