60% of Women’s Murders Committed by Partners or Family: UN Report

A United Nations report highlights that homes are the most dangerous place for women and girls. In 2023, 140 women and girls were killed daily by intimate partners or close relatives—one every 10 minutes. Globally, 85,000 women and girls were intentionally killed, with 60% of these murders occurring at home.

While women are most at risk in their homes, male homicides largely take place outside family settings. This stark contrast underscores the unique dangers women face within their closest relationships.

The number of women killed by intimate partners or family members rose from 48,800 in 2022 to 51,100 in 2023, showing an alarming increase in violence against women and girls.

Root Causes of Violence

UN Women’s Deputy Executive Director, Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, attributed this violence to entrenched gender stereotypes and harmful social norms that perpetuate inequality and abuse.
