Seeking necessary direction for corrective measures in the NRC, State NRC Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma wrote a letter to the RGI on February 15, 2020.
The RGI has asked the State NRC Coordinator to wind up the NRC update exercise as soon as possible.

The Coordinator said that anomalies have led to the inclusion of a large number of ineligible names in the NRC.
RGI has instructed the Coordinator to issue rejection slips (to the over 19 lakh names dropped from the NRC) and wind up the operation of updation of NRC.
In October this year, the high court had asked the NRC state coordinator to file a comprehensive affidavit on how some ineligible persons managed to get included in the final list.
The updated NRC released in August last year had excluded over 1.9 million of the 33 million people who had applied to be included in the NRC
NRC was an initiative to identify genuine Indian citizens in Assam and weed out illegal immigrants.
The exercise was done following a Supreme Court order and was conducted under its supervision.
Soon after its release, almost all political parties and organisations of Assam denounced the list, saying it included names of ineligible persons and left out many genuine citizens.
