The Charaideo Maidams, a burial mound system of the Ahom dynasty, has officially received the UNESCO World Heritage Certificate of Inscription. Assam's Culture Minister, Bimal Bora, received the certificate in Paris.
The Maidams is the first cultural property from Northeast India to earn the UNESCO World Heritage tag. The decision was made at the 46th World Heritage Committee session held in India in July.
UNESCO’s Assistant Director General for Culture, Ernesto Ottone Ramirez, presented the certificate to Bimal Bora in the presence of India’s ambassador to France, Vishal B Sharma, marking a proud moment for Assam.
While Kaziranga and Manas national parks are Assam's natural World Heritage Sites, the Maidams is the first from the cultural category to gain this prestigious recognition.
Bora shared his excitement on X, "A grand Magh Bihu gift for Assam as the Charaideo Maidams get the official World Heritage Site Certificate of Inscription from UNESCO. My congratulations to every Assamese on this proud moment."
