EXPLAINED: China To Build World's Largest Dam On Brahmaputra River: How Will It Impact India?

Sentinel Digital Desk

China has approved the construction of the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet near the Indian border. Estimated to cost $137 billion, this mega-project has raised global concerns.

The dam will be built at a massive gorge in the Himalayan region, where the Brahmaputra makes a sharp U-turn before entering India’s Arunachal Pradesh and flowing into Bangladesh.

This dam, with an investment exceeding one trillion yuan ($137 billion), will surpass China’s own Three Gorges Dam, currently the largest in the world.

How Will The Brahmaputra Dam Impact India?

India fears disruptions to water flow and potential regional instability. India is particularly concerned about the possibility of flooding in border areas during emergencies or hostilities.

India is constructing its own dam on the Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh. This move aims to balance the river’s water management and counter potential risks posed by China’s dam.

Since 2006, India and China have maintained the Expert Level Mechanism (ELM) to discuss trans-border river issues. China also shares hydrological data with India during flood seasons.
