The word Monsoon is believed to be derived from the Arabic word Mausim, meaning a shift in wind or season
It is a seasonal wind shift over a region which causes heavy rains.
The period June to September is referred to as the 'Southwest Monsoon' period, principal rainy season for the Indian subcontinent
Mainly there are 2 types of Monsoon, Southwest Monsoon form June to September & retreating Monsoon from October to November
The monsoon rains arrive over Kerala coast in the South India around June 1, marking an initiation of India's summer rainy season
Southern India is covered in 1st week of June, then progresses towards the North and covers half of the country's landmass by mid-June and entire India by mid-July
Sowing of summer crops like rice, cotton, cane and soybean is done during rainy season
Festivals like Teej, Puri Rath Yatra, Ganesh Chaturthi, Raksha Bandhan, Onam etc are some of the major festivals celebrated during the season of monsoon in India
Tamil Nadu is the only state that doesn't receive these rains due to its position, it gets rainfall during retreating monsoon (Oct-Nov)
