India and Qatar have decided to strengthen their relationship by elevating their ties to a strategic partnership. An official agreement was exchanged between the two nations to mark this new phase of cooperation.

The announcement came after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. They discussed ways to enhance trade, investment, technology, and cultural ties.

Both countries plan to double their trade to $28 billion within five years. Talks also covered the possibility of a free trade agreement, which could further strengthen economic ties.

India and Qatar discussed broadening energy cooperation, ensuring a steady supply of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) and other energy resources for India's growing needs.

The two nations agreed to avoid double taxation and prevent fiscal evasion on income taxes, making business and investments between the two countries smoother.

Apart from bilateral agreements, the leaders also discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest, reinforcing their diplomatic and strategic collaboration.

The Emir of Qatar arrived in New Delhi for a two-day visit. In a rare gesture, PM Modi personally received him at the airport with a warm handshake and a hug, highlighting the importance of the relationship.
