India is set to become one of the few nations to introduce an on-road vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air ambulance service. A $1 billion deal has been signed to bring this futuristic service to every district in the country.
IIT-Madras-based startup ePlane Company will supply 788 electric air ambulances to ICATT, India's leading air ambulance provider. These aircraft will help improve emergency medical response across the nation.
WHY eVTOL AIR AMBULANCES?
With rising traffic congestion in Indian cities, eVTOL air ambulances will provide quick medical transport. Being electric, they are also eco-friendly, reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional air transport.
The Indian eVTOL sector is rapidly expanding, with startups like Archer Aviation, Sarla Aviation, and ePlane Company leading the way. The government is also working on easing airspace regulations to facilitate eVTOL and drone-based services.
ePlane Company plans to begin air ambulance operations by late 2026. The company will have the capacity to produce 100 air ambulances per year, ensuring steady deployment across India.
ePlane Company is developing three types of air ambulances, designed for different regions and population densities. Each will have space for a pilot, a paramedic, a patient, a stretcher, and essential medical equipment.
