Over 80% of Indian tech professionals suffer from fatty liver disease, according to a University of Hyderabad study.

The study found that 84% of surveyed IT employees have Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD), linked to prolonged sitting, high stress, poor diet, and low physical activity.

The study, conducted on 345 Hyderabad IT employees (July 2023–July 2024), examined the impact of sedentary work culture. It found that prolonged sitting, work stress, and irregular sleep contribute to MAFLD.

The study found that 71% of surveyed IT employees were obese, and 34% had metabolic syndrome, a condition linked to obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

What is Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD)?

MAFLD occurs when over 5% fat accumulates in the liver due to metabolic dysfunction. It is the leading cause of liver disease globally, and, if untreated, it can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer, or the need for a transplant.

MAFLD can lead to type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. Reducing sugar intake, staying hydrated, exercising daily, and losing weight can help reverse its effects.
