One Nation, One Time: Centre Drafts Rules For Mandatory Adoption Of IST

Sentinel Digital Desk

The government has proposed new rules to make Indian Standard Time (IST) the only official time reference for all legal and commercial activities. Public feedback on the draft rules is invited until February 14.

The proposal aims to ensure precise timekeeping for critical sectors such as telecommunications, banking, defence, and technologies like 5G and artificial intelligence.

Exceptions for Specialized Fields

Certain fields like astronomy, navigation, and scientific research will be allowed exceptions, but only with prior government approval.

Compliance and Penalties

Strict penalties will be imposed for violations, with periodic audits to ensure compliance across sectors to maintain accuracy and reliability.

The Department of Consumer Affairs is working with the National Physical Laboratory and ISRO to develop a reliable timekeeping system. Public suggestions and comments are welcomed until February 14.
