Former Prime Minister and Congress leader Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92. He breathed his last at AIIMS Delhi on Thursday evening, leaving behind a legacy of intellect and leadership.
Dr. Singh became India’s Prime Minister on May 22, 2004, after Congress’ election victory. His tenure continued for a second term in 2009, marking a decade of service as the nation’s leader.
Early Life and Education
Born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab province, undivided India, Dr. Singh completed his matriculation from Punjab University in 1948. His academic journey was exceptional, earning an Economics degree from Cambridge in 1957 and a D.Phil from Oxford in 1962.
In 1971, Dr. Singh joined the Government of India as an economic advisor. By 1972, he became Chief Economic Advisor, a stepping stone to his illustrious career in public service.
From 1987 to 1990, Dr. Singh served as Secretary General of the South Commission in Geneva, contributing to global economic policy discussions and collaborations.
Dr. Singh was honored with the Padma Vibhushan in 1987, India’s second-highest civilian award. His contributions to India’s economic growth and governance remain unparalleled.
