Australian cricket star Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket. His decision came after top-scoring in Australia's ICC Champions Trophy semi-final defeat against India in Dubai.
Smith made his ODI debut against the West Indies in 2010 as a spin-bowling all-rounder. Over 170 matches, he scored 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He also took 28 wickets.
Smith was part of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 ICC World Cup-winning teams. He also captained the ODI side from 2015 and led the team in his final match as an interim captain in the absence of Pat Cummins.
In his final ODI, Smith scored 73 off 96 balls on a tough pitch in Dubai, helping Australia set a 265-run target. Despite his efforts, India chased the target to reach their third successive Champions Trophy final.
Smith was named Australian Men’s ODI Player of the Year in 2015 and 2021. He was also included in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year in 2015, cementing his legacy in limited-overs cricket.
