ITANAGAR: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has chosen Project Arunanak for five commendation certificates which were announced on Thursday coinciding with the 61st BRO foundation day.

Project Arunank is located at Naharlagun near here, with Brig A S Chonker as chief engineer.

Three commendation certificates were given for the Daporijo Bridge over Subansiri river, while one each for construction Koriang-Huri axis and Lemiking-Taksing axis roads in tough hilly terrain against various odds leading to the Indo-China border.

The roads are of strategic nature which facilitates smooth movement of more than 600 villagers and 3,000 security personnel along the Indo-China border, a senior BRO engineer said.

When asked as to why the bridge got three awards, he said that the 430-ft Bridge on Subansiri River located at Upper Subansiri district headquarters Daporijo is considered to be the gateway to Asaphila and Maza along Indo-China Border.

The 430 feet multi span bridge served as a strategic line of communication along China border besides Daporijo, the district headquarters and other villages located on the other side of River. It also connects the Siang belt with Upper Subansiri district.

The bridge constructed several decades ago was in a dilapidated condition and movement of vehicles over it was restricted owing to huge risk of it collapsing anytime. The state government had taken up the issue of reconstruction of the bridge with the Centre.

The reconstruction work was subsequently entrusted to the BRO under Project Arunank, which after taking over from state PWD started works from March 17, this year.

It was completed in only 27 days despite challenges posed by COVID-19 lockdown.

The bridge was being upgraded to 40 tonne classification which would not only improve capacity but would facilitate future infrastructural development of the district. The bridge was earlier downgraded to 9 tonne classification keeping in view its condition and restricting all movement towards the LAC, the sources added.
