DHUBRI: A group of artisans from Bihar has been visiting Dhubri to make flutes and Tom-Tom gadi. The artisans have been stranded here since lockdown began on March 24. However, Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Anant Lal Gyani, after being informed about the stranded artisans, is making arrangements to send them back to their home State Bihar within a couple of days. The 13 artisans, who hail from the two districts of Khagaria and Saharsa in Bihar, like every year, arrived in Dhubri on March 7 and engaged themselves in making of flutes and Tom-Tom gadi in the house of Dev Kumar in ward no. 10 (Nuniyapatty) of Dhubri town. When this scribe met the group leader, Mohammed Azmal he said that they were not having any problem of food or stay but the lockdown was beyond their expectation and imagination.

"We completed our flutes and Tom-Tom gadis in the first week of April targeting fairs like Ashoka Austami Mela (Dhubri), Charak Mela (Dhubri), Bogribari Mela at Mahamaya Dham (Dhubri district), Charantali Mela (Garo Hills of Meghalaya) and the mela at Abhayapuri (Bongaigaon district)," Azmal said. He said that they produced flutes and Tom-Tom gadis worth Rs 3 lakh but could not sell any of these as due to the lockdown no fair was held. Azmal said that whatever money he had brought with him was spent long ago and he had to borrow from a money lender known to him here. Besides this, they had no problem as many organizations and individuals provided them dry food and fruits during this month of Ramzan. Residents of the Nuniyapatty area too extended total support to the artisans and never made them feel insecure, said Dev Kumar, owner of the house the artisans are staying in. When contacted by The Sentinel, Deputy Commissioner Anant Lal Gyani said that he had already started the process for sending the artisans back home.
