7 kgs suspected Ganja recovered at Guwahati Railway Station

Guwahati: Around 7 kgs of suspected Ganja was recovered at around 6 am during routine checking at Guwahati Railway Station by the officials of the Railway Police Force (RPF) on Friday.

A passenger identified as Braj Kishore Kumar (26), son of Ramprit Choudhury, Baisali, Bihar from Tripura Sundori Express Train (coach no A-1, seat no- 10) at Platform No-3 was apprehended in connection to the matter.

Approximately value of the seized item is assumed to be around Rs. 50,000.

The said passenger boarded the train at Ambasha of Tripura and supposed to be delivered the item at Hadipur in Bihar.

The recovered ganja has been seized as per provision of NDPS Act. A case is being registered in this connection.

It is to be noted that Ganja is a Hindi and Nepali name for hemp, derived from the word Ganja referring to a "powerful preparation of Cannabis Sativa". The term ganja, one of the oldest and most commonly-used synonyms for marijuana in the English language, dates to before 1689.

The word was used in Europe as early as 1856 when the British enacted a tax on the "ganja" trade.

One academic source places the date of introduction of ganja in Jamaica in 1845. The term came with 19th-century workers whose descendants are now known as Indo-Jamaicans.
