Curfew has been imposed in Guwahati on Wednesday to tackle the deteriorating law and order situation prevailing in Assam amid massive protests over the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).
The curfew was imposed at 6:15 pm and it will be imposed till 7 am on Thursday, Assam Police Director General Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta.
Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Assam and stage fierce protests opposing the Bill. Anti-CAB protesters clashed with police. Police had to resort to lathi-charge, water cannons, tear gas and blank fire to disperse the crowd.
The contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was tabled in the Rajya Sabha today. The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on late Monday night with 311 votes in favour of the Bill. The Bill which has triggered massive outrage in Northeast India has to be passed by both the Houses of the Parliament to become a law.
