Govt survey says Nagaland State capital Kohima is second most ‘unlivable’ city in India

Nagaland State’s capital, Kohima, has gained an infamous distinction of being the second most ‘unlivable’ city in India. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, on its Ease of Living Index ranked Kohima 110 out of 111 cities on August 13.

Rampur in Uttar Pradesh is ranked as the most unlivable city in India which is only one step bottom from Kohima in the index.

The index stated that three cities of Maharashtra – Pune, Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai – are ranked as the first, second and third most livable places in the country. Other most livable cities in the top 10 are Tirupati, Chandigarh, Thane, Raipur, Indore, Vijaywada and Bhopal. According to MoHUA data cities on the bottom of this list are: Silvassa (102), Saharanpur (103), Kavaratti (104), Pasighat (105), Itanagar (106), Bhagalpur (107), Bihar Sharif (108), Patna (109), Kohima (110) and Rampur (111).

The Ease of Living Index is an initiative of MoHUA to help cities assess their liveability vis-à-vis global and national benchmarks and encourage cities to move towards an ‘outcome-based’ approach to urban planning and management, the Ministry said in a statement released through PIB.

The index is premised on four parameters – governance (Institutional), social institutions, economic and physical infrastructure which was broken down into 15 categories and 78 indicators.

Kohima scored a total of 18.13 out of possible 100 points based on the parameters. It suffers damage on three pillars – institutional (governance), economic and physical, but relatively score better in the social sphere.

Kohima scored 3.62 (or 14%) out of possible 25 points in governance, scored 0 in economic with ‘economy and employment’, scored 6.76 (or 15%) out of 45 possible points on the Waste Water Management and Housing and Inclusiveness.

Even though, Kohima performed relatively better in the social pillar with an overall score of 7.75 (or 31%) out of 25 points.
