GOLAGHAT, May 14: At a time while the Narendra Modi government is publicizing about various schemes for child welfare and pregnant women, in Golaghat district, 1,187 Anganwadi Centres (AWC) out of 2,223 Anganwadi centres do not have any permanent building.

According to official record, there are 2,223 Anganwadi centres in Golaghat. Out of these, 1,187 Anganwadi centres do not have permanent building. As a result, children and pregnant women have to take nutritious food provided by the government from temporary centres like naamghars, clubs and local people’s houses. Anomalies in distribution of nutritious food by a section of Anganwadi workers have also been alleged.

According to guidelines of the Social Welfare Department, management committee and Anganwadi workers of Anganwadi centres have to provide khichdi, suji halwa and egg to each and every registered child every day. Similarly, they should provide nutritious food to pregnant women amounting to Rs. 6 per day. But some dishonest managing committee members and Angawadi workers are involved in corruption. They show a false figure of children in their registration books. Due to lack of proper enquiry and visits of the superior officers in rural Anganwadi centres, these type anomalies are going unckecked.
