Journalists urged to be politically conscious

Doomdooma, July 2: The 13th biennial conference of Doomdooma Press Club was held on Sunday with a day-long programme. After holding of the last executive meeting on Saturday, the programme got underway on the following day with hoisting of the club’s flag in the morning by president Anuj Kalita. This was followed by smriti tarpan by former secretary Manoj Dutta. Thereafter, tree plantation programme was undertaken in the premises of Doomdooma 30-bedded FRU where tree saplings were planted by Senior Medical and Health Officer Dr Ranjit Das, vice-president of Doomdooma Senior Citizens Association (DSCA), Dulal Dutta and treasurer of DSCA, Giridhar Nanda. The delegates session was held under the president ship of Anuj Kalita and inaugurated by Himen Bhatta, former president of Tinsukia District Journalists Association (TDJA). In his speech, journalist Bhatta lamented at the degradation of qualities like honesty, sincerity and dedication amongst the current breed of journalists and urged them to keep in mind people’s interest above all other considerations while reporting.

At the same time, he exhorted the media houses to implement the recommendations of the Majithia Wage Board for redressal of the plight of the journalists. Another speaker, Amulya Khataniar, also an alumnus resident and resident of the playground TDJA, insisted that the journalists should be politically conscious in order to have a proper understanding of the political activities of the country. Secretary Abhijit Khataniar presented the secretarial report which was passed by the house. A 11-member new executive body for 2018-20 was elected with Arjun Baruah as president, Manoj Dutta as secretary, Dhiren Deka as vice-president and Pittar Chand Mittal as treasurer.
