Landslides claim 9 lives in Northeast India's Manipur, Mostly Children

Imphal: Perennial rainfalls and resultant landslides woes continue to haunt Northeast as two Manipur villages came under the wrath of landslides today which killed at least 9 people, officials said. Among the nine people killed, most are believed to be children. There have been three incidents of landslides at Manipur’s Tamenglong district that has affected New Salem and Neigailuang villages.

Many houses were collapsed at New Salem Village at Tamenglong district headquarters of Manipur at the wee hours of the day.

While the rest of India celebrates at the advent of monsoon, for Northeast India monsoon presents a sorry state of affair every year.

Like every year, the flood situation in Northeastern states has been pathetic. There have been several instances of flash floods and landslides reported from Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, and Assam.

In Assam alone, 17 deaths have been reported so far with more than 24,000 people still trapped in the deluge across four districts.

Ravinder Singh, Tamenglong District Magistrate that the district administration is working on a war-footing to recover the dead bodies.
