Newly Married Woman died under suspicious circumstances in Nalbari, Murder Suspected

Nalbari: Sensation triggered at Bhutkatra village near Paikarkuchi in Nalbari after a newly wedded woman died under suspicious circumstances on Thursday evening.

Locals claimed that the newly wedded woman who recently got married to Arup Kalita of Bhutkatra village had taken her to Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital under the critical condition on Thursday evening, however, she was declared brought dead by the doctors.

On the other hand, parents of the deceased woman claimed it to be a case of pre-planned murder and lodged a case in connection to the matter at Nalbari Police Station.

Meanwhile, the husband of the deceased wife has been detained by police for questioning.

It may be mentioned that earlier, the Assam government informed the August house of the Legislative Assembly that around 12,750 cases of crime against women were registered in the state in the year 2017-18.

In a written reply to a query by Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said in Assam 1,751 cases of rapes, 539 murders and 10,460 dowry crimes took place across the state in 2017-18.

Replying on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who holds the Home portfolio, Chandra Mohan Patowary informed that in the previous financial year 1,571 rapes, 490 murders and 9,629 dowry-related crimes were registered in the state.

In 2016, the total number of crimes recorded in Assam was 1,07,022, which went up to 1,11,118 in 2017, the minister said.

Furthermore, experts are of the view that such rising figures of crimes of sexuality and violence against women could be assessed as an embarrassment to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government since it came to power in 2016 while assuring the protection of lives and property of the people.

During the state assembly session, Assam Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said that a total of 4,130 cases of rape have been reported from across the state in the last two years, a total of 15,470 cases related to dowry have been reported during the period.
