Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi termed the Assam police's ongoing operation against illicit drug trafficking and cow smuggling as drama by the BJP-led government. Gogoi, a former RTI activist and president of the Raijor Dal, was elected to the Assam assembly from the Sivasagar constituency in the last election.
As per the strict step announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma immediately after he took the charge, the Assam police have launched a war on drugs. The war continues and the police have nabbed a large number of drug peddlers apart from seizing huge quantities of illegal drugs from them. However, MLA Gogoi called it a gimmick.
“If the government really wants to fight against the illicit drug trafficking, then why they do not form a Special Task Force(STF)?”, Gogoi said.
According to Gogoi, the government has given importance to uproot the cow syndicate just to cover up the other syndicates. He alleged that the police’s operation against state illicit drug traffickers and cow syndicates has become a political tool of the government. “Only small drug peddlers have been caught. No big mafia was arrested,” he added.
