Curfew relaxed, uneasy calm prevails in city

Staff Correspondent

Shillong, Dec 14: Today’s nine hours of curfew relaxation in vulnerable parts Shillong city passed off without any untoward incidents. However, the ambience displayed an uneasy calm.

Last night’s notification by the district administration that curfew has been reimposed from 10 o-clock made no reference about the timing of the relaxation. Everyone and everybody were asking about the relaxation, till another notification was issued this morning that the curfew has been relaxed till 7 pm without any public announcement. With the internet and other forms of communication network down, those who learnt about the relaxation rushed to the nearest market, especially those under Sadar police station and Lumdiengjri police station. The uneasy calm that prevails is evident as shutters of all the business establishments in Police Bazaar, GS Road, Iew Mawlong, Polo and other areas of the city remained down. Many of those in these areas told this correspondent that they don’t want to take unnecessary risk because miscreants do take advantages of unpleasant situations.

Meanwhile, five companies of the Border Security forces (BSF) have joined to aid the East Khasi Hills district in maintaining law and order. Already, the special anti-riot team backed by the police special operation team and the CRPF are already in place throughout the susceptible stretches. While the heat against the CAA is on and the demand of the ILP gears up for another phase, Sunday is expected to add calm to the volatile situation in Shillong.

CoMSO slams Governor Roy over tweet

SHILLONG, Dec 14: Slamming Governor Tathagata Roy over his remarks that those who want “divisive politics should go to North Korea,” the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) said that the Governor himself is trying to bring the “North Korea model” into the State.

“It is the Governor who is trying to bring the North Korea model to Meghalaya. We can clearly witness that the Governor is behaving like a dictator by refusing to the recommendations and suggestions made by the Cabinet,” CoMSO stated.

“The Governor had delayed to give his assent to the MRSSA ordinance when the Cabinet had already approved it. Who is he to delay when he is only the Governor?” CoMSO chairman, Robertjune Kharjahrin said while speaking to reporters here today.

Meanwhile, Kharjahrin said that the Governor should not continue to provoke the people of the State. “He has not come to the State as a Governor to provoke the people and also disrespect their sentiments. He should accept and recognise that the people are against the Citizenship Act and want ILP. He should avoid making any remarks which will provoke or make the people angry,” Kharjahrin added.

“Rumours were doing the rounds that some people who were part of the protest rally organized by CoMSO on December 13 had received bullet injuries and that some have also died due to the same. This is to clarify that there was only one person with grievous injury which was due to the fact that he fell from the top of a wall and a sharp iron grill had pierced his abdomen. The medical report had clearly indicated that “there are no traces of bullet found and no exit wound found,” read a statement issued by the police.
