Death of poor priest

The death of Toseshwar Sarmah, a poor priest on the verge of being octogenarian falling from an open foot-path near Keteky Hotel, Amolapatty, Dibrugarh may be insignificant to many. But the circumstances under which the 79-year-old Sarmah had to die to make many to raise their eyebrows. It is experienced by the residents of the greater Amolapatty area that the newly built foot-path is covered superficially at the whims and caprice of the contractor concerned. In many places hackneyed, the worn-out cover was used. Where the foot-path remains uncovered, pedestrians walking along foot-path take extra precaution to divert his/her movement, but there are a good number of footpaths where it is covered but a very small portion remains open. While moving it is difficult to locate such open small portions. The poor priest fell victim of such an open footpath. This phenomenon of the open footpath is more conspicuous by its presence near Keteky Hotel and Dibrugarh Government Girls’ HS & MP School. In Keteky Hotel marriage ceremonies take place frequently. In our opinion, it was the duty of the hotel authority to bring the matter to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner. Alas! The poor priest attended the marriage ceremony little realizing that death awaits him in the open footpath on his way back. The district administrative machinery is to be blamed for ignoring such vital issues. We request the authority concerned to give compensation to the next kin of the deceased priest who had to die due to the negligence of the district administrative machinery.
