Illegal migrants in NRC

It is common knowledge that names of a sizeable number of illegal migrants have found their way into the NRC by various fraudulent means. In many cases there has been suspicion of such persons obtaining various genuine documents by fraudulent means, while in many other cases the suspicion is that a section of NRC officials themselves aided and abetted in the process. While some of these illegal migrants had themselves managed to get their names included in the NRC, the general suspicion is that a powerful racket having the blessings and backing of influential people worked overtime to help the illegal migrants obtain various kinds of documents by hook or by crook. That was one reason why the number of names rejected was just about only 19 lakh. Now that the new State Coordinator of NRC has reportedly asked Deputy Commissioners across the state to ascertain how many persons declared as non-citizens by the different Foreigners Tribunals, such suspicions are only beginning to grow stronger by the day. According to reports, the new NRC State Coordinator has also asked the Deputy Commissioners to ascertain how many persons whose cases are pending in the different Foreigners’ Tribunals have actually made their way into the NRC. The new NRC State Coordinator incidentally was an insider when the crucial process for preparation of the NRC had started. He was one officer who had apparently pointed out numerous instances of ineligible persons – persons of doubtful antecedents and citizenship status – getting or trying to get their names included in the NRC. People in the media also know that the new NRC State Coordinator had landed in a friction with the then NRC State Coordinator, as a result of which he was shunted out of the NRC process during the crucial verification period and the period of release of the final NRC. It is common knowledge that some political groups having unnecessary love for illegal migrants had opposed tooth and nail the return of the former Deputy Coordinator as the new State Coordinator. This was because of the fear that these groups have about what the new incumbent would do once he returned to the NRC office. What the new NRC State Coordinator could probably do next is to pray before the Supreme Court to conduct a random forensic examination of the different documents in certain well-known immigrant-dominated areas of the state. This will certainly lead to the discovery of many illegal migrants getting enrolled in the NRC through various fraudulent means.
