Decrease in number of buses in Guwahati

Through your esteemed daily, I would like to draw your attention towards a familiar issue, mainly dealt with by the common people and citizens travelling by bus in the last few days. While traveling, it is noticed that the number of buses in the last 2-3 days has comparatively decreased than usual days. Lots of people and students have to wait at different bus stops for hours as the buses that are traveling arrive already with huge numbers of people. For students and common people, traveling for long-distance, it is a concerning issue, as no one knows when it will be going to normal. Common people are harassed also by the conductors of buses, by adding more people than its capacity, without following any COVID protocols. Somehow, they are also taking the advantage of the situation. But with the rising numbers of Corona cases in recent days in Guwahati, it is needed to look after the matter seriously. While providing the Pink Buses by the Government is a good advantage, but only for older citizens and women. What about the rest? I request the Transport Department to take the matter seriously soon.

No 'wonder woman'

I am very pleased with what Shanta Baruwa Borkotoky has brought up to our notice in her article "She isn't a wonder woman" dated 26/02/2021 in this newspaper. The boundaries and expectations that particularly the Indian society sets for women can be deeply frustrating for those whose ideologies vary. Even with women empowerment programmes, we still find in many areas of the country that women are confined to a set of limited access to move forward simultaneously with men. To add up more, our tradition of so-called 'cultured woman' anticipated to play the mere submissive role along with the barometer of dress code, quitting careers for motherhood, bargaining freedom with safety, etc. There is a long list of do's and don'ts.

Education plays an important role in building understanding and ethos, and as such a progressive primary education is crucial for young pysche to develop a new era of equal gender rights and value individuality with more acceptance.

Rape and murder of Karabi Rabha

It is unfortunate that the rape and murder case of 12-year-old Karabi Rabha at Baligaon, Sonitpur district of Assam, has not yet received much attention from the national media. The minor, along with her mother and younger sister was lifted by some unknown goons on February 20. Five days later, the minor's body was found in a paddy field. Her mother and sister are still fighting for their lives in the hospital. It is suspected that the victim was first raped and later brutally murdered by the miscreants. The police are investigating the matter, but have not been successful to capture the culprits. It is really shame that the national media have not taken the matter seriously. Therefore, State media should/must take some initiative to bring the matter into the notice of the national media. The more is the investigation delayed, the better are the chances for the culprits to escape. We want CBI investigation into the matter. Karabi Rabha's case is similar to that of the 2012 brutal Damini murder case and hence the culprit must be hanged to death. We want justice for the victim.

Kalyan Rabha,

Udalguri
