End of an era in Assam politics

An era in Assam Politics came to an end with the death of former CM Tarun Gogoi.

I feel proud to have passed out from the same college i.e J.B. College as him, though I am half his age.

Leaders come and go but their popularity can be gauged by the crowd of well-wishers who prayed for him and who were there to catch a last glimpse of the departed leader. The traffic jam on Wednesday at GS Road stands as an witness to this fact. A life very well lived indeed!

Assam will have to wait for many more years to find a popular leader like him who had well- wishers from all sections of the society.

The teaching fraternity has rightfully gained from his timely actions on pension matters as was told to me by my late aunt in law Lt. Subha Borbora, Vice Principal of JB College. She had pointed out to me that the former CM had indeed played a crucial role in timely disbursement of pensions which became a boon in her later life. He had a huge respect for the teaching fraternity.

Self regulations

TV channels should keep a check on the content they are broadcasting. But if this was happening, the spread of fake news would not have increased rapidly. TV, a popular medium, influences people and creates communal disharmony. Thus, self regulation is not an option because private bodies give permission to any type of content. Therefore, a government body should be set up to ensure that the sentiments of all communities are respected and that facts are checked before being broadcast.

Role of UNDHR in journalism

UNDHR, which means Universal Declaration of Human Right also called UN Declaration of Human Rights, is an international document adopted in 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly that enshrines the rights and freedom of all human beings. It commits nations to recognize all humans as being born free and equal in dignity, regardless of nationality, place of residence, gender, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language or any other status. The declaration is considered as a 'Milestone document' for its 'Universalist language' which makes no reference to a particular culture, political system or religion. As a student of Journalism and Mass Communication it is very much important to understand UNDHR because communicating among the masses needs proper rules and regulations which are provided by UNDHR. One should keep in mind about the right of other human beings; they should perform their duty without disturbing and violating the basic rights and values of people. So in that case they should understand UNDHR for the safety of the society and for themselves. As a journalist one must be very careful and have knowledge about human rights. The universal declaration of human right remains still very relevant, now available in 360 languages. The declaration is the most translated document in the world and it has become a yardstick by which we measure right and wrong. The declaration and its articles include right to freedom, right to life and liberty, right against slavery, right against cruelty and inhumanity, right to recognition as a person before the law, right to protection against any discrimination, right to an effective remedy on violating the fundamental rights, right against arbitrary arrest, right to equality, right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to the law, right against interference with privacy, right to freedom of movement within the border of state, right to nationality, right to freedom of marriage, right to property, right to freedom of thought, right to religion, right to freedom of opinion and expression, right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association, right to take part in government, right to social security, right to work and employment, right to rest and leisure, right to a standard living, right to education, right to culture and literacy. Certain new clauses need to be added to this particular declaration as it needs to be reviewed. It needs to add the rights regarding press and journalist, it should give an individual the right to seek, impart and share information without interference from any authority. It must include the right to protest against any injustice. It must also include the rights of all gender and their freedom of transformation. It also needs to add the rights to copyright and the right to protection of nature and environment.

Thrown to gutters

The pandemic of COVID-19 is not over, though cases have dropped significantly in our State. Already COVID-19 is raising its ugly head particularly in Delhi. We should all adhere to the protocols as prescribed by the Health Department like maintaining social distancing, wearing of mask, frequently sanitizing our hands, etc. But it is now seen that all these must-do practices are thrown into gutters in Assam. Wearing of masks by the people have reduced significantly, plus various political parties which are campaigning for the forthcoming BTC elections are flouting the protocols openly. Our Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma who worked tirelessly in the fight against corona pandemic is himself become very callous. In his election rallies, he has completely made mockery of his own prescribed protocols and norms thus throwing everything into gutters. Situation is alarming and God forbids that we don't have to hear whistling of death.
