Problems during poll campaigning

Through this column of your esteemed daily, I would like to highlight the fact that the election campaign is creating problems for the general public.

Politicians have a habit of promising big and delivering less. Poll campaign is going on in full force and roads are either blocked or diverted at major junctions of the city, leading to re-routing of traffic. The State transport buses are being used for the electioneering affecting the commuters.

Parking charge

Through this column of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to those who collect parking charge in the Fancy-Pan Bazar area. I personally came across a person who asked me to pay Rs 10 instead of Rs 5 for two-wheeler parking. I parked it only for 5-10 minutes. When I asked for the receipt he refused to give. When I put pressure on him to give me the receipt, he took Rs 5 and left. They may even charge extra money from others too who don't care about the receipt. I feel this is unethical, and strict actions should be taken against them. And also citizens should be vigilant enough to ask receipt while making such payments.

CAA and Assam

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has recently declared in Kolkata that the BJP government would implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Act shortly. The local people of Assam do not support the CAA as they regard it as a big burden to the State.

The CAA would legalize illegal settlement of several lakhs of Bangladeshi Hindu people who have been living in Assam for years. Moreover, Assam, being a very small State in size, cannot take the burden of millions of foreigners. The language and culture of the indigenous people in Assam are different from that of those foreigners. For the safety of the indigenous people of the State, the BJP government should not implement the CAA in Assam.

Traffic rules

Traffic is really a concern in Assam. We need modern solutions like digital billboards and digital signs. Over-speeding and rash driving should be visually monitored on real time. The roads are to be renovated from time to time and laws should be implemented against people who set their domestic cattle free on highways instead of farmlands. Such acts lead to numerous accidents. Moreover, we should be honest with traffic norms. People should wear helmets while riding motorcycles and seat belts while driving a car. I urge all to read and implement traffic laws to maintain a good traffic environment.

Spitting in
public places

Whenever I go to markets in Biswanath Chariali, I observe that some people, including shopkeepers spit in front of their shops. This is a serious matter. The government or other authorities should look into this and take appropriate measures, including imposition of fines. Also the public should be made aware of the fact that spitting in public places can transmit coronavirus. Thus, the authority concerned should take appropriate measures so that the second wave of COVID-19 does not spread again in Assam.

The forgotten chapter

It has been a long time since the abduction of two employees of Quippo namely Ramkumar and Pranab Kumar Gogoi from Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The abduction took place on 21 December 2020. After many negotiations between the government and the rebel outfit with a mediator and also fervent appeals and prayers from the general public a healthy and positive solution seems to have emerged, bringing smiles and relief to the family and well wishers. But sadly, it was very short lived. With the election fever reaching its peak in the State, the issue appears to have become a forgotten chapter. All the print and electronic media are busy with election news.

'Big Brother'

The term 'Big Brother' refers to a senior one among brothers. In the Congress and AIUDF alliance, Congress is treated as the big brother. The AIUDF is assuring the voters of opening Madrassas if it is voted to power. It also allegedly urges the womenfolk to go for unrestricted births. One can imagine what the would-be situation in Assam in the event of the Congress-AIUDF alliance coming to power in the State. Certainly the hidden agenda of the AIUDF will be implemented since its Big Brother will be totally dependent on it. We the sons and daughters of the soil should emulate the teachings of the first PM of Assam Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi else the writings on the walls are pretty clear.

Quad cooperation

Countering China's assertive policy in the Indo-Pacific and North Korea's nuclear programme, other unlawful activities are possible through Quad cooperation. The US looks at India as a key partner in the Asia-Pacific region. The Indo-Pacific region represents the most populous and economically dynamic part of the world and India has a crucial role to play. Quad can help in adherence to freedom of navigation, rules-based order, stable trade environment, free air and sea lane connectivity and upholding international rules and norms.
