Quality slightly improving

The most popular game on the earth football has many followers in India. Team India was once a formidable soccer team in Asia and also has the distinction of reaching the semi-finals in the Helsinki Olympics. The popularity of the game started to dwindle because the quality of football in the country dipped. Team ranking slide low in Asia in the mid-90s and people lost interest in the sport. In the last 10 years, thanks to ISL the quality of the game is slightly improving as the team qualified for the Asia Cup in the last edition due to the untiring efforts of coach Igor Stimac. The team could hold out to draws with Asian giants. Though World Cup is out of the equation presently but qualifying for the next edition of the Asia Cup should be counted as a success. In the last match played on 7th June against Bangladesh, the team displayed good temperament and skills to twice break the citadel of Bangladeshi defence and earn three valuable points in their quest to qualify for the prestigious Asia Cup. We need two to three more players like charismatic Sunil Chetri to have strong bench strength. AIFF should arrange more friendly matches with strong Asian sides to test the strength and weakness of the team. On June 15 the Blue Tigers will face Afghanistan and hopefully, they would not disappoint the football fans of the country. Qualifying for Asia Cup is the right step in their quest to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in the next 8-10 years

Timely editorial

Your editorial column published on June 6 with the caption 'Crackdown on drugs' was very timely. For us, the identity of those people whom you want to know are as follows

1. They are the people who murderously assaulted Dr Seuj Senapati, who was on duty.

2. They are the same people who are the vote bank of Mahagathbandhan.

3. They are the same people who are involved in drug trafficking, robbery, burglary, cattle lifting, land grabbing and all the other criminal activities.

4. They are the same people who were involved in vandalizing public properties during the anti-CAA movement launched by AASU and Congress.

5. They are the same people involved in post-poll violence in West Bengal sending thousands of people into Assam seeking asylum.

6. They are the same people who 'came to Asom earlier than Swargadeo Sukhapha' as claimed by Bharat Narah, ex-AASU president and current MLA from Naoboisha.

Twitter storm

Through your esteemed daily, I would like to draw attention to the board exams of Assam of the year 2021. After the cancellation of the CBSE Class 12th examinations, 12 States of India have cancelled the board exams. The students of Assam demand the cancellation of their exams too by storming Twitter by posting #CancelAssamBoardExams2021 and the NSUI has also pushed for the cancellation of board examinations. The decision is yet to be taken by the State government of Assam. But the decision should be made as earlier as possible so that students don't fall into a havoc situation and can pursue higher degrees and courses.

Simultaneous elections for President and Vice President

The Prime Minister has been concentrating, and rightly too, for simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and all State Assemblies which require modalities for practical implementation. But at the same time, such a system of simultaneous elections for the posts of President and the Vice President needs urgent attention without any hurdles of practical implementation. At present, there is a gap of just 17 days in the tenures of President Ramnath Kovind and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu which can be covered by crowning M Venkaiah Naidu as caretaker President from 26.07.2022 till 11.08.2022.

Post of Lok Sabha Speaker should be upgraded to that of second Vice President with President and two Vice Presidents simultaneously elected in the same manner as President is elected by all MPs and MLAs but through EVMs equipped with VVPAT on nominations signed by at least 34 per cent MPs. In case mid-term vacancy caused at the post of President, Senior Vice President may be made President for the rest of the term. Interim Vice President can be elected by all MPs only (not MLAs) for the rest of the term. However, in the rarest of the rare case of none of the three elected ones is feasible to remain on a post, then fresh regular elections for the next five years may be held for all the three posts.
