No vaccine, No entry

All right-thinking and responsible people of the state must appreciate and hugely applaud the Government of Assam for barring the entry of people in all public places who have not taken both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. That the latest SoP released by the State government has virtually declared all government and non-government places as "public places" can be surmised from a tweet of the Chief Minister, which clearly said that barring hospitals, people who have not taken both the Covid doses will have no access to any public place. The government has done well by issuing a warning that if anyone violated this rule, the institutions or organizations concerned would also have to bear the brunt. This newspaper on Sunday quoted state health department sources as having said that the "no-full vaccination, no-entry" rule has been imposed at all places from Saturday itself and that all business establishments have to debar any person who has not taken both vaccine doses. To doubly ensure that people follow the new rules, the State Health department has also done well by announcing that anyone missing the date of the second dose will not get free treatment in government hospitals from now onwards. While a section of government employees have so long shown total disrespect to the repeated announcements of the government to get both doses of the vaccine, the new SoP has also made it clear that government officials who are not fully vaccinated would not only be debarred from attending their offices but would also face pay cut for the default. While the government has made its intentions clear on its role in containing the third wave of the pandemic, the citizens too have their role to play. What the responsible citizens can do is to stop buying things from vendors and shopkeepers who have not taken both doses and do not wear a mask, and also stop using cabs, auto-rickshaws, cycle rickshaws and battery rickshaws whose drivers have not taken both doses of the vaccine and do not wear a mask. Citizens should also refuse to buy things from vendors who come door-to-door to sell fish, vegetables, utensils, woollens and other items. Guests and visitors who have not taken both doses and do not wear masks should also be refused entry, even if it sounds indecent or impolite.
