Of Illegal Liquor Selling

Of Illegal Liquor Selling

The clandestine selling of liquor has been so deeply rooted in every nook and corner of the State that an innocent, brave youth of Jorhat, Asish Borah had been murdered by a group of liquor-dealer brutally at Jorhat. His fault was he raised his voice against the illegal selling of liquor as reported in the print media. This unfortunate incident took place despite the gory happening of the death of more than a hundred persons as a result of taking spurious liquor in Golaghat and Jorhat districts. It is often alleged from many quarters that the nexus among the police, excise department and illegal dealers of country and foreign liquor is so strong that the illegal dealers have scanty sense for the lives of the people. Needless to add that many families of Assam have been shattered owing to consumption of liquor. Our police and excise departments, instead of rising to the occasion to arrest such a negative trend, always abet the wrongdoers. This case of Jorhat should not be viewed as an isolated one rather in almost every urban and certain rural areas are also victims of such dangerous social malady. We are certain that if only the Superintendents of Police can take deterrent against such illegal selling of liquor, many untoward incidents of liquor tragedy can be averted.
