Of Politicians’ Clean Image & Reality

Presently in our country, politics appears to be moving quite apart from what is was earlier when it was truly dedicated for the greater interest of the people and the land. Nowadays, it is also a matter of grave concern that the political system has become ‘criminalized’ to a great extent. However, there are two kinds of personalities in the political system. Although some leaders still active in politics have been able to keep themselves clean to a large extent; and somehow they are also working for the betterment of the country. But they are a rare breed. Another important matter is that some people in politics still maintain good social and public images. However, that cannot be said about all the politicians.

There is also a need to bring in self-introspection among the uniformed personnel so that the sanctity of their uniforms remains intact. It was in the fitness of things that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal asked the police personnel to ensure that they rededicate themselves to their jobs. This will definitely help the masses and the nation at large.

Among a few other relevant issues that have been closely connected with public life is the issue of price. The sky rocketing prices of some essential commodities including onion, vegetables, potatoes, LPGs and bus fares have been harassing the common people. I would like to say that the State Minister for Food and Civil Supply Department is an honest politician. But in true sense of the term, we are unable to see his active and bold steps to solving this burning public problem.

The State Transport & Industry Minister has also failed to rise to the occasion. The condition of the State’s public sector ‘ASTC’ has turned worse what with its improper and inefficient administration. The private transport sector in the State has thus found open space to earn more profit by hiking bus fares frequently. It is also a cause of concern as the common people cannot bear such hikes in the transportation sector.

So I am trying to state that only a clean and good social image does not work always; rather our leaders should personally look into various public matters and try their best to solve public sufferings and thereby gift us a prosperous and developed State.

Damodar Sarmah,

Sivasagar.
