Oil Pilferage

Oil Pilferage

At a time when the country’s economy is going through a bad phase, it is painful to see how government money is siphoned off by anti-social elements in the form of pilferage of oil. Since quite some time past, we have been coming across news about oil pilferage and we could see how oil thieves amassed fabulous riches and live cosy lives in their palatial homes. The Central and State governments paid little heed to prevent this open theft of the country’s resources. There were intermittent reports of some oil thieves being caught by the police; we also learnt how a corrupt section of oil company (OIL and ONGCL) officials were hand-in-gloves with the oil thieves and extended them insider help. There were rogue cops too in these networks. A front page report published in your esteemed daily, (The Sentinel, November 26) detailed the picking up of five persons for alleged involvement in the pilferage of crude oil from ONGCL from Dangdhora under Titabor sub-division. It has come to light that they were involved in stealing of crude oil from ONGCL’s pipeline between Borhulla and Sivasagar. Kudos to the 25 Assam Police Battalion personnel instrumental in apprehending the culprits. The police are learnt to trying to unmask the mastermind of the racket. The investigation should be pursued to its logical end, because it could identify corrupt oil company officials and law enforcers who aided and abetted such theft for personal gain.
