Politician Attacks Cops

How close the Congress has been to illegal migrants from Bangladesh and how well well-protected Bangladeshis have been in Assam became all too evident on Monday, when a police party went to the Milanpur area of Morigaon to arrest one Rustam Ali, who had been declared an illegal Bangladeshi migrant by the Morigaon district Foreigners Tribul. A group of miscreants, led by Congress leader Habibur Rahman Siddique attacked the police party injuring several policemen. However, the police arrested three persons in this connection. The Congress too, promptly slapped a six-year suspension on Siddique, who is reported to be absconding. Several questions arise of which three are important. (1) Is this how the majority of those identified as illegal migrants from Bangladesh are helped to ‘disappear’? (2) Given the need of these illegal migrants from Bangladesh for the Congress, would the party have suspended leaders like Siddique if 2016 had not been an election year for Assam? (3) Why did the Speaker of the Assam Assembly and Congress MLAs  prevent discussion of such an important matter for the State in the Assembly. We talk of privileges of legislators. Did the Speaker of the Assembly realize thee disservice done to the State by blocking such a vital discussion in the Assembly?
