‘It was love at second sight’: Ratna Pathak Shah and Naseeruddin Shah’s ‘intense’ but not ‘whirlwind’ romance

MUMBAI: Over their whole careers, veteran actors Ratna Pathak Shah and Naseeruddin Shah have excelled as performers and diligent workers.

Some of the best jewels in Indian film have come from them (Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Mandi, Lipstick Under My Burkha, Masoom). But despite excelling in their own fields, they have been married for more than 40 years, and they have always stood by one another.

As Satyadev Dubey's 1975 drama "Sambhog se Sanyas Tak" was being rehearsed, Naseeruddin and Ratna first crossed paths. In a previous interview, Naseeruddin described his relationship with Ratna and said, "All great theatrical romances begin at a rehearsal."

In Naseer's words, "sparks sparked right away" when they first met at a juice stand outside Mumbai's National College. Ratna, however, paid no heed to him. He was just another outstanding actor who had joined the production in her eyes.

They spent more time together while practicing "Sambhog se Sanyas Tak," though, and she began to fall in love with Naseer. Sambhog Se Sanyas Tak was a very crucial title for the play.

Their relationship, according to Naseer, was "quite heated," not a "whirlwind." We had been dating for six years, he told media, before deciding to get married.

Ratna and Naseer, however, had to wait a bit before they could officially declare their love for one another because Naseer was already married to Parveen Murad, and the couple had a daughter, Heeba.

Despite the fact that Naseer and Parveen had been living apart, it took them some time to obtain a divorce decree. In the meantime, Ratna and Naseer moved in together.

Ratna recalled a time during their relationship when they both had to count their wallets for cash after placing an order at a restaurant on one of their earlier dates during an AIB podcast.
