A tribute to Rahila Khatoon

We remember Rahila Khatoon on the occasion of her Challisha ceremony which is being celebrated today, Sunday, the 14th of June 2020. A resident of Keating Road, Shillong in Meghalaya, she breathed her last on May 5, 2020 on account of old age ailments.

Rahila Khatoon was born in 1928 in Bourghat Village of Hailakandi Sub Division of the then Cachar District of Assam. Her father was late Masaddar Ali Barbhuiya, a teacher at Nischintapur Primary School in Hailakandi, Assam. Her mother, Nurjahan Begum, was a homemaker. Married in her teens to Kutub Ali Laskar, who was the Registrar of IGP's Office Assam, she moved over to Shillong, the capital of Assam during the British regime. She lived in Shillong ever since then.

She was very friendly in her disposition and could relate stories of the British officers and their whims in the pre-Independence days in course of her conversations with people. A mother, who brought up her children with utmost care and attention, was a role model for her contemporaries in the society. She was associated with a number of social organisations in her prime and was fond of serving the people in whatever way it was possible for her.

She leaves behind a host of children, grandchildren, and in-laws who are spread across the globe today. She was laid to rest at the Muslim Burial Ground at Mawprem in Shillong on May 6, 2020.
