GUWAHATI: Guwahati denizens heard slogans of a different note on Saturday when members of the ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) took out a procession, seeking support for the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).

The ABVP took out the procession from Guwahati Club Rotary via Dr. B. Barooah Road and GS Road. The students demanded that the CAB is their right and the Bill should get its passage in the Parliament. They also criticized those opposing the Bill.

The leadership of the ABVP said, “We strongly think and feel that the CAB will help safeguard our land, culture and language. Earlier also we came in supporting the CAB and this time too we appeal to the public to come and support the Bill. We appeal to the students to support the Bill so as to make people understand that the Bill is a national level one, not just in Assam. Being Assamese we never want the existence of the Assamese to be at stake. We’re supporting the Bill that has been amended, and we think it’s our moral responsibility to provide shelter to those suffering in Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan.” Significantly, the students of B. Barooah College came out with placards in hands opposing the CAB when the rally was going in front of the college. However, police and paramilitary personnel on duty in the entrance of B. Barooah College did not allow them to come out of their college campus.
