AJYCP Demands Closure of Lower Subansiri hydroelectric Project

GUWAHATI: The stalled Lower Subansiri hydroelectric project along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh has been reignited by the NHPC after almost eight years sparking heated debates. The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) thoroughly condemned NHPC's announcement to restart the project and termed it illegal.

President of the Parishad, Rana Pratap Baruah, in a press release said that the killer project spells doom for the people of Assam. "The desire to complete the Lower Subansiri hydroelectric project is both unjustified and illegal. In the coming years, if notions of bringing the project to life are not curbed, we along with public aid will resort to extreme agitation," said Baruah.

"In 2014, a tripartite meeting was organized between the Central government, State government and various other organizations. It was determined in the meeting that an expert committee will be formed according to whose decisions a conducive step would be undertaken. However, the report of the expert committee was never made public. Our prime motive behind opposing the move of NHPC to restart the Lower Subansiri hydroelectric project is that it will not benefit Assam in any way. If the project cannot yield economic gains for the State, there is no reason to bring the project to life," said general secretary of the Parishad, Polash Sangmai.
