Asom Gana Parishad to elect president today at party headquarters in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) is going to hold its 11^th central general conference and elect its president at party headquarters at Ambari in Guwahati on Thursday. This conference is crucial as it is going to elect the president of the party for the next three-year term.

Intra-party politics is at its peak in the regional party on the election of president. Incumbent party president Atul Bora and working president Keshab Mahanta are ministers in Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal's Cabinet. According to reports, party president Atul Bora and working president Keshab Mahanta are in the race for their respective posts.

However, the role to be played and policy to be adopted by former Chief Minister and founder AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is something to be seen on Thursday.

Meanwhile, talking to the media senior party leader and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury said, "The leadership of the party should rest with any of those below 60 years of age. Some of us have been with the AGP since its inception in 1985. Many of us feel that the senior leaders aged over 60 years should play the role of guardians giving the responsibility of leadership to the youth brigade. And the policy of the party should be respect and honour for the seniors and affection for the juniors."

According party sources, tomorrow's conference may elect only the president and the working president, besides authorizing the president to fill up other posts. This conference is crucial since this committee is to lead to the party in the 2021 Assembly election. At president the AGP has 14 MLAs in the State Assembly.
