GUWAHATI: The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has condemned the incident in Barak Valley where some Bengali organizations allegedly smeared black ink on a banner of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) of the government written in Assamese.

The Bengali organizations allegedly claimed that the government banner written in Assamese violated the 1961 language pact that states the Bengali language as the official language in Cachar and Barak Valley. The organizations demanded that the banner should be written in Bengali.

This incident evoked a sharp response across the State. AJYCP president Pratap Baruah said, "We strongly condemn this incident. Such an insult to the Assamese language will not be tolerated. Surprisingly, the administration is yet to take action against those responsible for the act." He further said, "The Assamese community is under threat. All indigenous organizations of Assam must unite to protect our language, culture and identity or the Brahmaputra Valley will become like the Barak Valley."

AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai said, "The Assamese language and community have been insulted. This is tragic." He said that some Bengali organizations were carrying out an evil design to dominate the Assamese community. "They want to bring the Bengali language at par with the Assamese language in Assam. According to the 2011 census, 48 per cent of the total population of the State spoke Assamese. If this percentage decreases further and the percentage of Bengali-speaking population increases, Assam will become a Bengali-dominated State," he added.

The AJYCP has demanded immediate action against those behind the incident. "The government must take steps to ensure that the Assamese language is safeguarded and protected. Banners in government institutions, government offices and business establishments must be written in Assamese and Assamese language must be made compulsory in educational institutions up to college level," said Changmai.
