Assam Cabinet Decision On Agorwood Plantation Hailed

GUWAHATI: The Cabinet decision on Agorwood plantation pending for last 25 years is now expected to be a major fillip for the planters of the state.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his Cabinet has made a historic decision and approved the ‘Industrial and Investment Policy of Assam, 2019’.

In a press meet at Guwahati Press Club on Wednesday, ASEAN-INDIA Business Council LAO-PDR chapter Chairman Habib Mohammed Chowdhury thanked the Assam Government for the decision. He said, “This is a progressive moment that will have an impact for years to come. The revenue generated from this project will enhance the quality of life for the people of Assam. Special thanks to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Minister Parimal Suklabaidya and all those officers who worked for this cause”.

Agar processing for home-grown Agarwood was allowed by The Assam Cabinet on July 22 which will benefit the farmers of Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat and Hojai districts of Assam. The Cabinet has also decided to set up an International Trade Centre on Agarwood in Golaghat district. Chowdhury added that the daily trade of Agarwood trade in Assam is around Rs. 4-5 crore, which includes business of raw materials to finished products. The State Government had to incur a loss of around Rs 200 crore due to lack of the right policy. The planters were at loss in the absence of free and open trade. Choudhury also appealed to the youth of Assam to avail this opportunity and be a part of the change in terms of economic development.
