GUWAHATI: The activists of the Assam Environmental NGO Forum staged a protest on the streets by raising placards to draw attention of the government on several environmental issues of the State, on Friday.

Moloy Baruah, coordinator of the forum in a press release stated, "On Environmental aspects, Assam reflects a gloomy picture. The explosion in a coop near periphery of the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is having a devastating effect to the flora and fauna of the region. Residents of the village are dependent on the wildlife. When Oil India Limited's (OIL) activities began 17 years ago, there was only a thin protest. But OIL needs to be squarely blamed for their casual attitude."

Expressing discomfort, the forum questioned that if the custodian of this country becomes greedy dacoit, who will bear the responsibility to maintain the dignity of the nation.

The forum further stated that since last few months there are several attempts to encroach the protected areas like Manas Tiger Reserve and Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary. "If the issue is not settled in the bud, one day we will lost both the protected areas," stated Baruah.
