Guwahati: Owing to the rise in the level of the mighty Brahmaputra, the Biswajit Pegu-led Kamrup (Metropolitan) District administration has once again suspended the plying of all kinds of boats and ferry services in the district from September 28 till further orders.

In an official order issued today from the Deputy Commissioner's office, it was stated that the water level of the Brahmaputra in Kamrup (M) district has been rising for the last few days and it has become "very difficult and risky for the vessels to navigate."

As per the order, the Director of the Inland Water Transport department had earlier written to the DC's office to inform about the peril posed to ferries in view of the rising water level of the mighty river.

"Plying of ferry service between Guwahati-North Guwahati and Guwahati-Kurua in such a situation may cause untoward incidents which may lead to a threat to the lives and properties of the public in general," the order further stated.

Thus, a decision has been reached to suspend boats and ferry service in the Kamrup (M) region "in order to avoid untoward incident."

In a related development, the Umananda Devalaya in Guwahati will remain shut till October 31 due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation and rising water level of the Brahmaputra. This was informed by the Devalaya Managing Committee secretary Anil Kumar Bhattacharya.

The decision to extend the closure till October 31 has been taken in view of the pandemic and rising water level of the Brahmaputra that continues to be in spate in several regions of the state. The ongoing downpours have caused yet another wave of floods in the state, with over 2 lakh people currently affected, as per an official report.

Umananda Devalaya, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Guwahati, is a Siva temple located at the Umananda Island (Peacock Island) in the middle of the Brahmaputra.
