Assam government approves release of 86 declared foreigners from detention camps

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has given approval for the release of 86 declared foreigners from detention camps, and most of them have already been released. It was on May 10, 2019 the Supreme Court of India issued a directive to release declared foreigners languishing in detention camps at least three years under certain conditions which the court had laid down. After the directive from the apex court, the Political department of the State issued a notification on July 29, 2019 for the release of foreigners staying over three years from detention camps. According to sources in the Political department, it has approved for the release of as many as 86 declared foreigners and most of them have already been released. According to the order from the Supreme Court of India, if a declared foreigner fulfils the conditions laid down by the court he/she has to be released by the government. Assam has six detention centres – one each at Jorhat, Tezpur, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Kokrajhar and Goalpara.
