Assam Panchayat Polls: BJP allows alliance at local level

GUWAHATI: The BJP has decided to allow its district and local-level leaders to go with like-minded parties for electoral understanding during the ensuing panchayat poll in the State.

The State BJP had its office-bearers’ meeting in the presence of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and party president Ranjit Kumar Dass in Guwahati on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Himanat Biswa Sarma and Dass had a meeting with the Chief Minister at his residence on the panchayat poll. The office-bearers’ meeting appealed to all district leaders and page-in-charges to be more active during the panchayat poll. The meeting made it clear that the party would have no alliance with any other party at the State level for the panchayat poll, but it would allow its district and local leaders to go for alliance with like-minded parties. The meeting discussed at length the negative campaign against the BJP on the NRC and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2018. It also drew a strategy not to allow the Congress, AIUDF and even the AGP to draw political mileage of the situation during the panchayat poll, sources in the party said.
