Assam State PDS Kerosene hawkers distressed over attachment with fair price shops

GUWAHATI: The Assam State PDS Kerosene Oil Hawkers’ Union on Monday expressed distress over the deteriorating condition that they are going through. Addressing a press meet here, president of the union Alam Patowary said that the previously determined quantity of each hawker has been reduced drastically in recent times. Alam said that the hawkers are being attached to fair price shops because ration cardholders have to approach these shops for kerosene. He said, “due to attachment with fair price shops the hawkers are not being able to sell kerosene conveniently. We demand that the hawkers should be allowed to sell kerosene independently.” Further, he said that the government should give each hawker at least 880 liters of kerosene every month to sell. He added that earlier each hawker used to get 4 to 5 drums of kerosene where 1 drum had a capacity of 220 liters. “Last year in November, our demands were placed in front of Food and Civil Supply Minister Phani Bhusan Choudhury, but till now the government has not paid heed to our concerns”, he added.
