GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) demanded the Oil Indian Limited (OIL) to call national/foreign experts to contain the blowout at natural gas producing well at Baghjan in Tinsukia.

The AASU demanded the State and Central governments to work on war footing to contain the blowout.

A team of AASU under the leadership of general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi visited the blowout site in Baghjan recently. The team interacted with the locals who were shifted to camps and took stock of their situation.

AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that around 3,000 people are residing in the camps and the mixture of gas and oil has polluted the region. Animals, fields, and tea estates were affected due to the blowout, they said.

AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said that the blowout has affected the Dibru Saikhowa National Park. Further, the body demanded that affected people should be provided with medical assistance and should be compensated.
