Basisthapur by-lane 1 is threat to life and limb

GUWAHATI, June 16: The Basisthapur by-lane 1 connecting Hatigaon Namghar path at Beltola-Wireless point in the city has turned virtually into a threat to life and limb for the passersby despite the fact that the road is being used by a huge number of people of the nearby areas to meet to their daily chores.

The road is dotted with innumerable potholes while the water from the drains flows on to the road even after a small shower while foul smell emanates along the road adds to the woes of the passersby. On account of the deplorable condition of the road, bikes, scooties and cycles meet with accidents quite often.

Bhaskar Barua, a local person, said that he has been in the area since long and that he has not seen the road being repaired or constructed though the road is a thoroughfare for a large number of people. He said that despite being a busy area, the GMC has not done anything to improve the road. Further, on account of absence of street lights, walking along the road full of potholes at night is a potent source of danger to life and limb. Again, the unhygienic condition prevailing in the area has also caused a number of people to suffer from various diseases, he said. Another person said that with a large number of vehicles plying on the road, even walking at times becomes a fearful proposition as one may slip anytime which he had actually suffered. The people of the area opine that with the monsoon having just set in, the need is to repair/construct the road and the drains immediately on a war footing.
